Depression
Everyone has ‘bad days’ when we feel down or sad, but these moments are usually brief and don’t last long. Depression is often mistaken for simply feeling low, yet it’s actually much more serious and can affect people in different ways.
For adults, symptoms may range from mild—such as a continuous low mood and poor self-esteem—to more moderate feelings like heightened anxiety, losing interest in hobbies or work, and withdrawing from social situations. Sometimes depression feels like an absence of emotion, a sense of emptiness or disconnection from life. Physical symptoms may also appear, including aches and pains, changes in appetite resulting in weight gain or loss, low energy levels, and altered sleep patterns.
Even though it might not seem possible while going through these experiences, depression is treatable and support is available. Consulting a GP or healthcare professional can help you take the first steps by checking for other medical issues and explaining the treatment options.
